Petri Dish Space Art

Updated: May 19, 2020

The Hubbel Space Telescope has provided numerous breathtaking images of the cosmos over the years that have inspired my artistic practice. I created the image below in resin and ink to celebrate Hubbel's 30th Birthday this year.

I create my space images in carefully controlled perti dish experiments, by adding different pigments of inks at set time intervals into semi set resin to build up detailed layers.

I use iron to further control the movement of the inks. Due to the magnetic properties of the iron particles they help to slow the expansion of the reactions.

The results are mesmerising, swirling miniature cosmos captured in time.

Some pieces go on to become brooches and handmade gemstones reminiscent of the mesmerising images captured in the deep space photography of Hubbel.
